The Sierra Vista football team won this game with its defense.

Senior Trent Mitchell had three interceptions Friday night in a 12-0 win over Durango, and the Mountain Lions had three separate goal line stands in winning the season opener.

“We certainly didn’t make it easy for ourselves,” coach Thomas Raybon said. “But we will take the positives out of this win (for next week). Our goal is to be 1-0 every week, and this was the first one.”

Caleb Green rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, and freshman Dom Fletcher had 67 rushing yards and a score.

The game was scoreless at halftime.
