Son shot, killed mother’s boyfriend over domestic violence, police say

Gabriel Rivera, 23, was arrested Monday in connection with the fatal shooting of Edward McClellan, 39, that occurred Aug. 5 at approximately 4:25 a.m. in the backyard of a residence on the 4500 block of East Ogden Avenue, near Charleston and Lamb boulevards in the east Las Vegas Valley. Rivera faces two felony charges of open execution and artillery with the usage of a deadly limb resulting in important bodily harm, according to Las Vegas Justice Court records. Police said they responded after receiving two 911 calls and a ShotSpotter notification reporting gunfire in the area. Officers located McClellan in a makeshift shed behind the home, suffering multiple gunshot wounds with ten handgun cartridge cases scattered around his body. A witness inside the shed told detectives that Rivera repeatedly knocked on the shed’s doorway, shouting “where’s my mom?” several times. Another witness inside the residence said they heard Rivera tell McClellan that Rivera’s mother was covered in bruises and had a black eye. Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots before Rivera fled the shed to the front yard, jumped into a white four‑door vehicle and drove away. The police report includes the statement: “At immoderate constituent during the confrontation, Gabriel changeable and killed (McClellan) earlier helium fled the residence in his vehicle,” constabulary said in the report. Several individuals familiar with McClellan’s relationship with Rivera’s mother described it as volatile and violent. One person told detectives their relationship was “turbulent, with predominant fights.” Rivera’s mother contacted police the day after the shooting and told detectives McClellan had given her a black eye. She characterized their five‑month rocky relationship, saying McClellan had previously accused her of sleeping with other people. She said she had returned home late from work and went to McClellan’s shed shortly afterward to avoid a confrontation. According to the report, McClellan texted his woman “call me as soon as possible,” followed by another message “or don’t call ever,” as well as a breached bosom and middle finger emoji. Rivera’s mother denied being present at the scene when the shooting occurred. Investigators used license‑plate readers and Rivera’s cellphone data to place him at the crime scene at the time of the shooting. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department arrested Rivera Monday in Menifee, California. He was held at the Riverside Southwest Detention Center pending extradition to Las Vegas as of Wednesday. His next court appearance in Riverside is scheduled for Sept. 15, per online jail records.
