Cimarron‑Memorial High School shot manager Shane Kanie arrived at the event with a keepsake in hand—a football preview guide produced by Greenspun Media Group for the 2007 season. The guide featured a play preview of Cimarron‑Memorial, the program Kanie would later lead as head coach, and included a photograph of himself among its pages.
In earlier years, players were photographed on the football field at Valley High School. Today the gathering has moved to Red Rock Resort, where it offers portraits, video interviews, a catered luncheon and sponsor activations.
Kicking off the season with the Sun’s event has become a rite of passage in Las Vegas prep football circles, attracting teams from every corner of Southern Nevada. The format mirrors college football’s league media days, providing athletes with a lasting memory of the experience.
For some participants it marks a first exposure to media training for future sports pursuits; for others it simply adds another layer to the high school journey.
The Sun proudly hosts the gathering each year, and the event benefits from the backing of numerous sponsors. Red Rock Resort serves as the prominent venue, described as an astonishing property.
Thanks go to presenting sponsors Zero Teen Fatalities, the A’s and Las Vegas Aviators. Zero Teen Fatalities sent representatives to meet with players and promote driving safety—a cause that resonates deeply with any parent of a teen learning to drive.
Supporting sponsors Las Vegas Raiders, Recruit Vegas and the Utah Summer Games added to the celebration. The Raiders spent the session taking portraits of players and coaches while attentively listening to program updates. The franchise goes above and beyond to support the high school game and other city causes, creating an astonishing interaction for the Sun’s event.
The same can be said for Recruit Vegas and the Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games. Mike Waters of Recruit Vegas recorded videos with athletes discussing best practices for college recruitment, outlining what to expect and highlighting relevant rules.
Jon Oglesby, executive manager of the Utah Summer Games, introduced the games. The initiative draws thousands of athletes across more than 30 sports to Southern Utah University, frequently hosting Las Vegas teams in activities ranging from youth soccer to football.
Each player in attendance received a commemorative garment from Nu World Graphics and lunch from Lazy Dog.
These contributors merit acknowledgment; together they helped produce one of the finest media days the Sun has organized.
This marks my 30th season covering prep football, and the memories are plentiful—this one adds to that collection.
The Sun is privileged that the community trusts it to document the season, year after year.
