U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham died Saturday after a brief and unexpected illness, his office announced via social media.
“The Republican from South Carolina passed away Saturday evening ‘from a little and abrupt illness,’” the statement read. No further details were provided.
Graham was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002. He has been a longtime ally of former President Donald Trump and a consistent critic of Iran’s nuclear ambitions. During his service in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 1990s, he backed policies aimed at isolating Tehran and limiting its missile and atomic programs.
