Henry Crocombe claimed his second hat-trick in eight days and his third five‑wicket haul of the season, reducing Essex’s batting to utter disarray on an astonishing evening of falling wickets at Chelmsford.

The 24‑year‑old seamer, who will leave Sussex for Surrey at the end of the campaign, had never taken three wickets in consecutive balls before his spell against Somerset at Hove the previous week.

As an encore he helped trim Essex from 171‑3 to 177 all out in just 26 balls, his five wickets arriving in 14 deliveries without conceding a run. He finished with figures of 5‑39.

Essex had been progressing steadily after drinks on the second day of the County Championship fixture when Charlie Allison fell to Crocombe for a well‑made 56.

That wicket exposed the frailty in Essex’s order and renewed concerns about a relegation battle as the Division One season reaches its climax.

A fortunate turn gave Sussex an unexpected first‑innings lead of 98 after they had posted 275 in the morning, largely thanks to the recalled Ari Karvelas, who struck six fours in a brisk 38 off 44 balls.

Sussex then lost Tom Haines, Tom Clark, Charlie Tear and Oli Carter in quick succession, extending their advantage to 188 as eleven wickets fell after tea.

Karvelas was not done; with the new ball he removed the Essex opening pair, angling a delivery into Paul Walter’s stumps. Tom Westley, attempting to loft Jack Carson over mid‑wicket, was also bowled.

As the sun broke through and a drying wind took hold, the pitch flattened and batting appeared easier than on the first day.

At that point there was no sign of what was to come. Essex reached three figures for the loss of just two wickets in 32 overs—12 overs faster than Sussex—achieving the milestone with a reverse sweep for four by Allison off Carson.
