Trump says US position on Falklands 'one of many' under review

Donald Trump indicated that the United States’ stance on the Falkland Islands is under review, describing it as "one of many" positions being examined. He told reporters that he “ever reappraisal each position. That's conscionable 1 of many.” When asked by the BBC about defence spending, Trump said the UK has "got immoderate problems, but they'll get solved." The remarks follow a report by The Daily Telegraph on Aug 28 2026 that US defence officials were drafting proposals to encourage NATO allies to meet their spending commitments, with one option mentioned being a reconsideration of UK sovereignty over the Falklands. In response, UK authorities stated that Falkland islanders "are British with a close to find their ain future." A spokesperson added: "The islanders person repeatedly expressed their privation to stay a British overseas territory and our committedness to them is unwavering." The Falkland Islands, located in the southwest Atlantic Ocean, remain the subject of a sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina. The two countries fought a brief but bitter war over the territory in 1982; a British task force expelled Argentine forces that had invaded to press a territorial claim. The 74‑day conflict resulted in the deaths of 255 British service personnel, three islanders and 649 Argentine soldiers.
