United flight returns to Las Vegas airport after ‘potential security concern’

A United Airlines flight headed to Newark Liberty International Airport turned back to Harry Reid International Airport on Thursday after what the airline described as a "potential security concern" involving a passenger disturbance midflight.

United Flight 1681, a Boeing 737 carrying 150 passengers and six crew members, "safely returned" to Las Vegas, according to an airline statement. Aviation officials confirmed the flight returned due to the disturbance.

The Clark County Fire Department and Las Vegas Fire & Rescue responded to the scene upon the aircraft's arrival.

The flight was subsequently delayed overnight because the crew reached their maximum allowable duty time, a situation known as a crew timeout. The aircraft departed for Newark the following morning.
