UNLV football is moving its scheduled home game Sept. 13 against Idaho State at Allegiant Stadium to Aug. 23, officials announced this afternoon.
A championship boxing match between Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford will occupy the Sept. 13 spot.
“The world championship boxing match is important to Las Vegas, and the impact it will have on tourism is unmatched,” UNLV athletic director Erick Harper said in a statement. “Las Vegas is the sports and entertainment capital, and we are a part of this amazing epicenter. As community members and an institution that works closely with many of the city’s great constituents, we felt it was important to request a waiver to show our commitment to the community.”
Harper said UNLV officials looked at a handful of scenarios and moving it to Aug. 23 — Week 0 in college football terminology — was the best option.
“We look forward to continuing to build great partnerships with the Las Vegas community,”Harper said.
The university hasn’t announced a time for the Idaho State game.
