Vegas Golden Knight Shea Theodore offers support, funding in the fight against breast cancer

Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore partnered again with Comprehensive Cancer Centers to host "Kay's Power Play," an annual event held in honor of his grandmother, who died of breast cancer in 2020. Theodore has worked with the group for seven years to raise money and awareness for early detection.

At this year's event, organizers announced $25,000 in new funding that will go to Las Vegas Breast Cancer Warriors and Susan G. Komen. The organizations provide services such as mammograms, financial assistance, transportation to treatment, and scholarships for families struggling to pay medical bills. Comprehensive Cancer Centers said that between Kay's Power Play and other efforts, more than $450,000 has now been raised to help local patients.

"They took such good care of my grandmother... it's hard not to continue that support for others," Theodore said. Doctors say about 2,700 Nevadans are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and mortality rates are declining as a result of screenings and new treatments.

"I'd much rather prevent cancer than treat cancer... even if you can't afford a mammogram, we'll find a way to get it done," Dr. Rupesh Parikh said. Doctors urge anyone who feels a lump or cannot afford a screening to contact Susan G. Komen or Las Vegas Breast Cancer Warriors for assistance.
