Washoe County Commission Chair Alexis Hill is running for governor, she confirmed to the Las Vegas Sun on Monday.

The Sparks native is joining a Democratic field that includes Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford and, potentially, former Gov. Steve Sisolak.

“I’ve devoted my whole career to public service, and right now, more than ever, I see that people are struggling,” she said. “We really need big wins for our workers and our families, and people are hungry for something different and they’re just not getting that right now.”

With her experience overseeing the state’s second-largest county, Hill said she knows what needs to be done for the state. She said public safety, an underfunded education system, housing and “unmet health care needs” are top priorities.

“Working families really need a voice, and I’m part of a working family,” Hill said.

Hill first won a spot on the commission in 2020 and recently fended off a Republican by around 15 points in last year’s general election. She received her graduate degree in public administration from UNR in 2011.

Hill has backed Nevada Treasurer Zach Conine, a Democrat, in his bid for attorney general.

“Chair Hill brings common sense leadership to the Washoe County Commission, and I’m proud to have earned her endorsement,” Conine wrote on social media.
