Title: Watch: Celebrations as Gibraltar-Spain border fence removed
Large crowds gathered at the Gibraltar‑Spain border overnight into Wednesday as part of the obstruction separating the British overseas territory from the EU subordinate state was removed.
The symbolic ceremony took place at midnight, when a new agreement came into force, removing the requirement for border checks at the crossing.
Negotiated for years after Brexit, the agreement incorporates Gibraltar into the EU’s Schengen Area of free movement, easing the flow of goods and people.
Chief Minister of Gibraltar Fabian Picardo pulled the fence down with a rope, while hundreds celebrated at the frontier.
