Aerial pictures showed a crowd of people running into the sea at one of the few Christmas Day dips to go ahead.

Organisers of the swim in Lowestoft, Suffolk said they had worked with coastguards, lifeguards and St John Ambulance to put on the event, despite several others being cancelled due to rough conditions.

Several swims planned for Boxing Day have been called off, including Cromer, Sea Palling and Mundesley in Norfolk, and Aldeburgh in Suffolk.

Sea Palling dip organiser Tonya Knights, from charity Let's Do It Anyway, decided to postpone the event after contacting the coastguard.

"They told me there were likely to be wave surges of up to 3m (10ft), which would make conditions unsafe. Our dippers' safety is of paramount importance," she said.
