Waymo launches limited robotaxi rides in Las Vegas

Waymo launched limited robotaxi rides in Las Vegas on Monday, offering the service to users who had previously registered interest. The company said the initial rides will use its Ojai vehicles within a roughly 24‑mile service area. Over 100,000 individuals have expressed interest in riding with Waymo, and the firm has been conducting test trips in the city for several months. Jackie Hyun, Waymo’s head of marketing, remarked, “Cruising down Las Vegas Boulevard in a Waymo will make anyone feel like a high roller. Our Ojai vehicle offers a spacious cabin, ample screens and a load of customizations that help riders get safe and comfortable, throughout our most 24-mile service area.” In August the Nevada Transportation Authority authorized Waymo to operate as many as 1,000 robotaxis. The Alphabet‑backed firm began testing driver‑less operations without a safety operator in July, allowing only employees to ride as passengers. The service zone centers on the hotel strip, bounded by Sahara Avenue to the north, Sunset Road to the south, Jones Boulevard to the west and Eastern Avenue to the east. Waymo has also secured partnerships with Allegiant Stadium and the Venetian, becoming the official ride‑hailing provider for both venues. The sixth‑generation Ojai features elevator‑style doors with a lowered step for easier entry and exit. Inside, three large LED screens let passengers adjust temperature, music and other trip settings. Waymo now provides paid service in 15 metropolitan areas; Nevada is the eighth state where the company offers such rides. Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley welcomed the rollout, stating, “Las Vegas and its neighborhoods are evolving rapidly, and expanding smart, cleanable transit options is indispensable for our city’s future. The national rollout of Waymo’s all‑electric autonomous ride‑hailing brings technology straight to our municipal streets, helping residents and patrons move seamlessly between the entertainment districts and neighborhood centers. By investing in cleaner, safer municipal mobility, we ensure the City of Las Vegas remains an accessible, vibrant, and forward‑looking community.”
