MUSIC: SAY SHE SHE The sequined soul of disco funk lives on in this Brooklyn-based trio, who’ve cited Rotary Connection and Chic as major influences. Founded by vocal powerhouses Nya Gazelle Brown, Sabrina Cunningham and Piya Malik, Say She She recalls the shimmering heartbeat of ’70s and ’80s dance clubs. The trio saturates its sound in airy, three-part harmonies; lustrous, layered instrumentation; and the grooving accents of a jam-inclined, fully relaxed band. Tracks like “Astral Plane” and “Cut & Rewind” will sound heavenly in a live setting. And Las Vegas’ own B. MISC: LYNCHLAND The late David Lynch wasn’t known strictly for his worldbuilding—his was a mastery of character, first and foremost—but he built them nonetheless, from the nightmarish world of Eraserhead to the deceptively calm world of Blue Velvet to the surrealistic world of Twin Peaks. Lynchland, a one-night-only cocktail party event presented by Wine Hearse, will feature immersive photo experiences inspired by those films, plus an all-vinyl set by DJ Copay, Lynchian flash tattoos by Lawless Atelier, limited-edition stickers created by Veia Luxe Vending, a costume contest, and a cash bar pouring Walla Walla, Washington’s Pursued by Bear wine, a collaboration between winemaker Daniel Wampfler and Agent Dale Cooper himself, Kyle MacLachlan. MUSIC: LATE NIGHT DRIVE HOME Since the end of the pandemic (whenever that happened), El Paso indie rockers Late Night Drive Home have been developing As I Watch My Life Online, their first full-length album, which finally arrived this spring. It’s been a long wait for a band that formed in 2019; broke through in 2021 with a vintage, synth-driven sound and Strokes-esque single “Stress Relief”; and signed with Epitaph in 2023 and played major fests like Coachella and Austin City Limits. The new album hammers down on themes of over-reliance on technology and entertainment escapism, but never gets too heavy thanks to healthy amounts of guitar distortion and warm melodies.
