ARTS: NEVADA BALLET THEATRE: ROMEO & JULIET Shakespeare harnessed the power of language to tell tales that have endured through the ages. Now, Nevada Ballet Theatre harnesses the power of dance to tell the tragedy of Romeo & Juliet. The 1940 ballet by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev with choreography by NBT’s James Canfield promises all the excitement of the play and more with lush costumes and sets, street fighting and swordsmanship. ARTS: STEREOPHONIC Not a musical. The multiple Tony Award-winning Stereophonic is about a band that’s on the cusp of mid-1970s superstardom, and it features original songs by Will Butler, formerly of Arcade Fire. But it’s not a musical; it’s a play by David Adjmi, and its songs are performed live on stage by the actors in a faux “recording studio.” Butler collaborated closely with playwright Adjmi to make the music fit the story, and vice-versa. “Hearing three people sing in harmony sounds so 1970s,” Butler says. “These people have spent a lot of time in a room to sound that good together.” Which, naturally, leads to dramatic dustups both creative and personal.
