The United States announced that it has placed an “on orbit limb” in Earth’s orbit, a move that has prompted questions about the nature of the weaponry being deployed in space and its potential role in the competition among major powers for orbital dominance. Secretary of the Air Force Troy Meink described the asset as indispensable for protecting U.S. forces from hostile action, yet he offered no specifics regarding its capabilities or the timing of its launch. Dr Bleddyn Bowen, an associate fellow in defence sciences at the Royal United Services Institute and professor of astropolitics at Durham University, said he could only speculate about the system’s purpose. “I would expect determination to beryllium immoderate benignant of physics warfare or radio‑jamming platform, possibly, this would beryllium a non‑destructive benignant of anti‑satellite weapon,” he told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. Bowen noted that similar technology already exists on Earth to disrupt communications, adding that severing power links renders a satellite “precise[ly] useless.” He did not rule out more aggressive options that could generate debris, such as a kinetic kill vehicle designed to launch a projectile that would ram and destroy a target satellite, or a proximity inspection and grappling satellite capable of maneuvering objects in orbit. Although the U.S. limb appears to be a novel deployment, Washington, Moscow and Beijing have long possessed systems that can be directed toward space. Over the past decade, Russia and China have intensified rendezvous and proximity operations (RPOs)—often described as “buzzing” Western satellites. According to Dr Rod Thornton, a scholar of Russian Defence and Security Studies at King’s College London, these RPO satellites could theoretically become hunter‑killer assets by physically colliding with or nudging adversarial spacecraft out of orbit. Bowen highlighted that China has demonstrated a “space tug capability,” whereby a vehicle can approach a satellite, grapple it and relocate it to a different orbit, a function that could serve both debris removal and the disabling of malfunctioning platforms. Thornton pointed out that while Russia lags behind in orbital weaponry and satellite numbers, it compensates with robust launch capacity. Ground‑based missiles capable of striking low‑Earth‑orbit satellites and air‑launched ASAT systems give Moscow a means to challenge NATO’s orbital advantage, which Russian officials view as overwhelming. As a last resort, Thornton warned, Russia could resort to detonating nuclear weapons in space, producing an electromagnetic pulse that would “fry” unhardened satellites across a broad region. He concluded that, given its limited satellite fleet, Russia might emerge as the “big winner” in any orbital conflict, a scenario likely to involve missiles launched into space, maneuvering satellites tasked with nudging or destroying targets, and ground‑based laser systems.
