After close first half, UNLV turns back Northern Arizona in season opener

UNLV avoided a second consecutive season-opening loss as a heavy favorite by rallying past Northern Arizona 89-77 on Tuesday night. The Runnin' Rebels trailed by four points at halftime before taking control in the second half for a comfortable victory.

Senior guard Sebastian Mack paced the Rebels with a game-high 31 points. The win comes a year after UNLV dropped its opener, and second-year coach Josh Pastner is aiming to guide the program back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013.

Sophomore forward Tyrin Jones, who played all of last season with a significant shoulder injury, is among the returning pieces for a roster that again features several new faces. Pastner has emphasized the need for the revamped group to come together quickly as the Mountain West Conference adjusts to the departure of five programs for the Pac-12.
