Top-seeded Bishop Gorman outlasted No. 4 Centennial 5-3 in a penalty kick shootout following a 1-1 tie through double overtime. Junior goalkeeper Lyvea Caceres stopped Centennial's Evelyn Contreras in the shootout after making several key saves during the extra periods, including three shots on goal, two corner kicks and a free kick in the second overtime. "(Caceres) has been great all year," Gorman coach Doug Borgel said. "I think she's the best goalie in town and in 5A and she had a great overtime."
The Gaels took a 1-0 lead in the second half when Mikayla LeCavalier headed in a corner kick from Bayly Powell. Centennial tied it with eight minutes left in regulation when Contreras scored from 20 yards out. Both teams converted their first three penalty kicks before Caceres made the decisive stop and Malia Browner netted the game-winner in the fifth round. Borgel noted it was the first time in his career his team made all five penalty kicks in a shootout.
In the late semifinal, No. 3 Arbor View stunned two-time defending champion and No. 2 seed Faith Lutheran 3-0. "It feels great," Arbor View coach Erica Peeples said. "The girls have worked hard all season and this well deserved. I'm very proud of them. We come in every game as the underdog, and we just knew that we had no pressure and all we could do was just play to the best of our ability."
Gorman (20-2-1) will face Arbor View (18-2-3) at 10 a.m. Saturday at Faith Lutheran for the 5A state title. The Gaels are seeking their first championship since winning consecutive 4A titles in 2018 and 2019, while the Aggies aim for their first since capturing five straight 4A crowns from 2012 to 2016. Faith Lutheran finished 14-3-3.
