National Public Lands Day, organized annually by the National Environmental Education Foundation in cooperation with the National Park Service and other national agencies, falls on the fourth Saturday of September. The event has grown into the nation’s largest single‑day volunteer effort since it was established in 1994. Visitors who have already made a reservation will receive an automatic refund for park entrance and camping fees where applicable, and need not take any action to receive it. Several parks will host special events. Spooner Lake State Park will mark the reopening of its west‑side backcountry, which has been closed for two years while repairs to Marlette Dam were completed. The Flume Trail, North Canyon Road and Marlette Lake will return to normal operation on Saturday, although Hobart Reservoir and surrounding trails will remain closed. Ice Age Fossils State Park will present a coffee talk program at 9 a.m. Fort Churchill State Historic Park will offer a nighttime hike beginning at 6:30 p.m.; registration is required and participants may call 775-577-2345. Spring Mountain Ranch State Park will hold a volunteer cleanup from 9 to 10 a.m. Participants in each program should bring long pants, closed‑toed shoes, sun protection and plenty of water. For schedules and details, visit parks.nv.gov. The Henderson Symphony Orchestra will present a free outdoor screening of Disney and Pixar’s “Up” at 7 p.m. Friday at Water Street Plaza, 240 S. Water St., Henderson. Activities begin at 6 p.m. The concert, led by music director and artistic advisor Taras Krysa, features the orchestra performing the film’s score live as the movie plays on the plaza’s 42‑foot LED screen. Composer Michael Giacchino received an Academy Award for “Up,” an Emmy for “Lost” and three Grammy Awards. The Pixar film also won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Clark County Commissioner Tick Segerblom and Clark County Parks and Recreation will host a free Latino Heritage Celebration from 4 to 8 p.m. Oct. 2 at the Cambridge Recreation Center, 3930 Cambridge St. The evening will feature live music, cultural performances, food and community vendors, workshops and children’s activities.
