Faith Lutheran’s Tyson Young defeated a friendly rival on the Crusaders’ way to a third straight state championship. Tennis players Tyson Young of Faith Lutheran and Lucas Rago of Bishop Gorman have a friendly rivalry going. On Friday, they had a little more than bragging rights to play for — a state title.
In the first round of the NIAA 5A boys tennis championship match, Young rallied from an early deficit to defeat Rago. Rago got off to a 3-0 lead on Friday, but Young was undeterred. The junior Crusader battled his way back to tie it up, then claimed a 6-4 victory.
From there, the No. 2-seeded Crusaders rolled to their third consecutive state championship, defeating the top-ranked Gaels 11-5 on their home court. Faith Lutheran won five of the seven singles matches that were completed, and six of the nine doubles matches.
Faith Lutheran coach Keith Fridrich said, “It’s what we worked for all offseason long. We weren’t trying to win a third in a row — we were trying to win this year’s state championship. It happened to be the third in a row, and we’re certainly thrilled that we’ve done it, but that wasn’t our focus. Our focus was one game, one match at a time. Today we played a really, really good team and we played great.”
