Game day: This prep football matchup in Las Vegas is rare

Bishop Gorman travels to Centennial tonight for what can only be described as the rarest of high school football season openers: a clash between two defending Nevada champions.

The Gaels captured the Class 5A title in 2024 as the national powerhouse program, while Centennial claimed the Class 5A-Division III championship. But realignment has elevated the Bulldogs to the top division, setting up this unprecedented matchup between two reigning champions in the same class.

Many other local programs are opening the season tonight, and a handful are playing out-of-state opponents. Green Valley, Faith Lutheran and Sierra Vista are hosting schools from California.
