The Golden Knights dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena on Saturday, going winless on a two-game road trip. Columbus center Adam Fantilli scored the winner 59 seconds into the extra period on a power play, 44 seconds after defenseman Shea Theodore was whistled for holding.
It marked the fifth consecutive game Vegas has surrendered a power-play goal. The Knights fell behind for the eighth time in 13 games when Blue Jackets defenseman Denton Mateychuk finished a backhand at 11:51 of the first period after Vegas failed to clear the zone.
Tomas Hertl tied it 1-1 with 2:47 remaining in regulation, burying a rebound after linemate Braeden Bowman was stopped by Columbus goaltender Cam Talbot. Rookie Trevor Connelly forced a neutral-zone turnover to start the play. Bowman had been elevated to the third line in place of Raphael Lavoie.
Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck turned aside all eight shots he faced in the second period, including a highlight-reel glove save on Sean Monahan, in his first start since allowing six goals on 20 shots against Tampa Bay. Talbot finished with 26 saves for Columbus, robbing Connelly and Jack Eichel in the third period to force overtime.
Forward Mitch Marner missed his second straight game while in Las Vegas with his wife Stephanie following the birth of their second child. The Knights fell to 8-4-1 on the season, while the last-place Blue Jackets improved to 4-5-0.
