Henderson police to detail shooting that left man dead

Henderson police are set to provide additional details about a police shooting that left a man dead. The incident began Saturday around 3:45 p.m. when officers responded to a domestic violence call in the 2000 block of Club Crest Way near Warm Springs Road and North Green Valley Parkway. Police said the suspect, identified as 48-year-old Ropati Tauiliili, had come to the home, battered a family member, and pointed a gun at multiple family members before leaving before officers arrived.

Later that evening, officers were dispatched back to the residence where they found a woman suffering from gunshot wounds. She was taken to a local hospital and is expected to be released. Police learned Tauiliili was in the area of South Eastern Avenue and Patrick Lane near the Davis Funeral Home, where he told an acquaintance he intended to provoke a confrontation with police and threatened suicide by cop.

When Henderson officers arrived at the 6000 block of Eastern Avenue, Tauiliili fired at officers and a Metro Air Unit. Officers attempted to establish dialogue, but he fired again. In response, two Henderson officers fired their weapons, hitting Tauiliili. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The officers involved have been identified as Julian Diaz and Thomas Whitney, both employed since 2019, and have been placed on paid administrative leave pending investigation. No officers were injured.
