Khan was taken from Adiala jail and sent to Shifa International Hospital under heavy security, local media report.

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was transferred from Adiala jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad after complaints about his deteriorating health. The move, carried out under tight security, followed a Supreme Court directive issued by a three‑judge bench that required Khan to be hospitalized within 48 hours for a medical examination. Khan, 73, has been incarcerated since August 2023 on corruption charges he maintains are politically motivated. His legal team says he suffers from several ailments, including impaired vision, and has been denied specialist care. In February, his lawyer stated that a lawsuit showed only 15 percent vision remaining in Khan’s right eye because prison officials had failed to act—a claim the government rejected. The court’s order, issued on Tuesday, included the statement: “We are mindful of the law and ineligible obligation... to safeguard the life, health, dignity and information of the prisoner.” The judges added that an ophthalmologist would participate in his treatment. Judges and representatives of Khan’s party, Tehreek‑e‑Insaf, warned supporters not to assemble outside the hospital, warning that any gathering would violate the judicial directive. Khan, who led Pakistan’s national cricket side before serving as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, faces over 100 cases ranging from disclosure of state secrets to the sale of state gifts, all of which he describes as politically motivated. He and his wife, Bushra Bibi, each received 17‑year sentences last year. His imprisonment sparked nationwide protests that were met with a security crackdown. Nevertheless, Khan continues to wield considerable influence among a broad base of Pakistani supporters.
