Southern Nevada high school football playoffs open Friday with semifinal games in Class 4A and the start of the 3A, 2A and 1A postseasons. In 4A, top-seeded Mater East (7-3) hosts No. 4 Cadence (0-9-1) while No. 2 Sloan Canyon (7-2) hosts No. 3 SLAM! Nevada (4-5), both at 6 p.m. Mater East earned the top seed despite a regular-season win over Sloan Canyon being ruled a forfeit, because the Knights' HRM score (1.333) was higher than Sloan Canyon's (1.667).
The 5A/Open playoffs begin Nov. 13, with the bracket finalized Sunday after the NIAA calculates final HRM scores for Bishop Gorman, Faith Lutheran and Losee. Gorman closes the regular season Friday at home against CIVICA Academy. Gorman is expected to be the No. 1 seed and face Faith Lutheran in a state semifinal, with the winner advancing to the Open Division championship and the loser dropping to play the 5A Northern champion for the 5A title. Losee, projected as the No. 3 seed, receives a bye to the Open title game on Nov. 20.
The Open, 5A, 3A and 1A state championship games are expected to be played at Allegiant Stadium on Nov. 20. In 3A, two Southern League semifinals will send winners to state semifinals against Northern opponents, while 2A and 1A open with state quarterfinal action Friday.
Review-Journal reporters Alex Wright and Jeff Wollard have issued their predictions for the opening-round Southern Nevada games. A full statewide playoff schedule is available and will be updated with scores and future pairings.
