Six teams at UNLV established program grade-point-average records in the fall semester, the university said today.

The women’s golf team, with a 3.63 grade point average, led the way. Records were additionally set by women’s track and field (3.43), diving (3.33), women’s basketball (3.41), men’s soccer (3.29) and football (3.17).

The department tallied a 3.34 cumulative GPA for the fall semester, the second highest mark in school history. It was the 15th straight semester the combined grade point average was higher than 3.0.

UNLV President Keith Whitfield said he was “incredibly proud of our student-athletes for their ongoing academic success. They balance the rigors of college life and continue to set records in the classroom and in competition, which reflects their commitment to excellence.”

The university placed 200 athletes on the dean’s list for the fall semester, the university said. The list is for students with a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.

Additionally, 75.3% (371 of 493) of athletes had a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher.

“I’m extremely proud of the dedication and hard work that has led to their continued academic achievement,” athletic director Erick Harper said. “We greatly appreciate our Student-Athlete Academic Services Department, as well as our coaches and staff, for setting high standards of excellence in our student-athletes' lives.”
