Southern Nevada firefighters compete for world titles in Las Vegas championship

Eight firefighters from Southern Nevada departments are among 386 competitors from 21 countries taking part in the 35th annual World Firefighter Challenge Championship in downtown Las Vegas. The event, hosted by Las Vegas Fire & Rescue and the Plaza Hotel & Casino, runs through Saturday at the LION Arena of the Brave course set up in the casino parking lot.

Competitors tackle a grueling obstacle course while wearing full turnout gear and self-contained breathing apparatus. The course simulates real emergency demands: climbing a five-story tower, hoisting equipment, chopping, dragging hose, and rescuing a 165-pound dummy, all against the clock. Athletes vie for world titles in individual, tandem, and relay categories.

Local representatives qualified from Las Vegas Fire & Rescue, Clark County Fire Department, North Las Vegas Fire Department, and N.T.T.R. Fire. Mayor Shelley Berkley welcomed the international field, saying, "Las Vegas is honored to host the World Firefighter Challenge, where the bravery and determination of our firefighters are celebrated on a global stage."

Qualifying rounds continue through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Individual finals are scheduled Friday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with tandem and relay finals Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The competition is free and open to the public at 1 Main Street.
