Starmer hints at bank holiday if England win World Cup
The prime minister has suggested that an additional bank holiday could be granted should England win the World Cup. Thomas Tuchel’s side ischel’s squad is set to face Norway in the quarter‑final on Saturday night. The final is scheduled for a week on Sunday, falling on 19 July.
It is widely anticipated that Sir Keir Starmer will resign as prime minister shortly after that date, making way for Andy Burnham to succeed him. Should England advance to the final, the prime minister would likely attend the match, a circumstance that could temporarily delay the transition of power.
When asked about the prospect of an extra day off for the public if England were to triumph, Sir Keir Starmer replied: "On the question of a bank holiday, I think I don't want to jinx it, but ask me again if we get to the final."
Officials indicate that the supplementary bank holiday would be observed on the Friday following a victory, namely 24 July. Nonetheless, the notion remains contingent on England first securing wins in the quarter‑final, semi‑final and final matches.
