The Meadows girls tennis team captured its second consecutive Class 4A state title Monday, defeating Doral Academy on a tiebreaker after the championship match was delayed three days and relocated from Reno to The Meadows' home courts in Las Vegas. Rain had postponed the state semifinals in Reno last Thursday, and because both Southern Nevada representatives — The Meadows and Doral Academy — advanced by beating Northern teams, the final was moved to create court space for individual tournaments.
The teams finished regulation play tied 9-9 after three rounds and split the six tiebreaker matches 3-3. The Meadows prevailed on total points scored in the tiebreaker round, 34-27. "My heart was beating real fast," Mustangs coach Averiana Mitchell said. "It was definitely a tough watch toward the end. Just a nail-biting kind of finish going on there."
Doubles partners Kiara Kurtzman and Cadence Luh won their matches in the second and third rounds to keep The Meadows alive. Doral Academy's Bella Wolfe, the 4A individual singles state champion, won all three of her singles matches for the Firebirds. "It feels really great, especially since it's my first year," Kurtzman said. "We were focusing on every point and not getting down on ourselves."
The Meadows singles player Somi Song won two of her matches and described the three-day wait as stressful. "We were worrying because we didn't know what we were going to do with the championship match, but it all worked out in the end," she said. The Mustangs had defeated Doral Academy 10-3 for the region title on Oct. 9.
Also Monday at The Meadows, Boulder City's Jake Richards won the 3A boys singles individual state title with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over The Adelson School's Ido Goren. In Reno on Saturday, Liberty's Austin Cox and Tristan Krkic captured the boys doubles title, while Doral Academy's Emily Bower and Alyssa Zeysing won the girls doubles championship.
