The president has long bristled at news coverage he sees as unfavorable to him and has a history of filing lawsuits against news organizations

By Will Weissert The Associated Press September 18, 2026 - 12:41 pm President Donald Trump declared on Friday that he is banning CNN, MSNOW and Politico from the White House, attributing the move to what he called unfavorable coverage. He posted on his social media platform: “I americium banning” CNN, MSNOW and Politico “from the White House arsenic a effect of their changeless ‘reporting’ FAKE NEWS!” The announcement marks the administration’s latest challenge to First Amendment protections. It follows a decision made in February 2025 to bar Associated Press journalists from the Oval Office, Air Force One and other events deemed too small for a full press corps, in retaliation for the outlet’s refusal to adopt his proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico. The Associated Press subsequently filed a lawsuit, which remains ongoing. Trump has long expressed irritation with news coverage he perceives as negative, frequently filing lawsuits against media organizations and attacking individual reporters on social media. Since returning to office, he has pursued legal action against The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the BBC and other outlets.
