Vigil to honor slain Metro officer planned for Friday A vigil honoring fallen Metropolitan Police Department officer Austin Abdelnabi is scheduled for 7 p.m. this Friday at Police Memorial Park, located at 3250 Metro Academy Way near West Cheyenne Avenue and the 215 Beltway in northwest Las Vegas. The event was announced in a flyer emailed Wednesday by Minddie Lloyd, director of the Injured Police Officers Foundation. Lloyd said the foundation is also raising funds to support Abdelnabi’s family. A statement from the nonprofit declared, “Officer Austin Abdelnabi served with honor, courage, and unwavering dedication,” the merchandise said. “His sacrifice volition ne'er beryllium forgotten.” Donations can be made online at https://ipof.vegas/. The Injured Police Officers Foundation, established in 1982, provides financial assistance to the families of officers injured or killed in the line of duty. Abdelnabi, 30, was shot and killed Tuesday after responding to a call shortly after 4 p.m. about a man who appeared intoxicated and was waving a firearm at a business in the 4500 block of East Tropicana Avenue, according to police. Sheriff Kevin McMillhill said Wednesday that Abdelnabi was ambushed as he exited his vehicle. Police reported that officers later located a suspect in the 5400 block of Mountain Vista Street, adjacent to Interstate 11, south of where the call originated. The suspect immediately opened fire on officers upon contact, and at least one officer returned fire. Abdelnabi was transported to University Medical Center, where he died. His mother, Amy Harvey, told the Las Vegas Review‑Journal on Wednesday that her son was married, a Clemson University graduate, and a Marine veteran. The suspect died at the scene. Authorities have not yet identified him and said additional body‑camera footage and further evidence from the shooting will be released Friday.
