Iran's foreign minister says diplomacy depends on U.S. rationality as regional violence continues in Gaza, Yemen, and the Persian Gulf.

Iran’s top diplomat hopes US shows ‘rationality’

Iran's top diplomat, Abbas Araghchi, said his country hopes the United States will choose "diplomacy over other paths" and show "rationality" as mediators work to prevent a wider war. In an interview posted on his Telegram channel, Araghchi said Iranian negotiators are in Qatar discussing a proposal that could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within two days if Washington meets certain conditions, though no direct talks with the U.S. are taking place.

Violence persisted across the region. Israeli strikes in Gaza killed eight people, including a young boy, according to Palestinian health officials. Five died in a strike on Khan Younis and three in Gaza City. Israel's military said it targeted militants. Since an October 2025 ceasefire, more than 1,570 Palestinians have been killed, raising the overall death toll above 74,500.

In Yemen, Houthi rebels reported two airstrikes on a medical school in Hodeida, blaming Saudi Arabia. The Saudi-led coalition acknowledged only a "precision operation." Meanwhile, Qatar's state-owned shipping company Nakilat said one of its liquefied natural gas vessels was struck by "unidentified objects" in the Persian Gulf on Friday night, damaging the ship but causing no injuries or environmental harm. Qatar condemned the attack and called for an investigation.

The United Nations is also seeking an investigation after a second U.N. employee died in Houthi custody in Yemen. The staffer worked for the human rights office.
