Las Vegas high school girls volleyball: What’s on the line in final week?

Bishop Gorman enters the postseason as the heavy favorite to win a fourth consecutive Class 5A state title. The Gaels (28-6, 7-0 Desert League) have dropped only four sets in 13 matches against Southern Nevada opponents this season despite graduating record-setting seniors Ayanna Watson and Trinity Thompson. Gorman has locked up the Desert League's No. 1 seed, while Faith Lutheran (27-7, 6-1) secured the Mountain League's top spot. Both teams will host region quarterfinals when the 5A Southern Region tournament begins Oct. 26, with Legacy High School hosting the semifinals and championship.

The Desert League's No. 2 seed — which guarantees a home quarterfinal and avoids Gorman until the region final — will be decided Tuesday. Foothill (21-9, 5-2) faces Gorman while Coronado (17-10, 4-3) plays Durango. The teams split their two regular-season meetings, meaning a sets tiebreaker could determine the seed. Liberty (12-16, 2-6) will be the No. 4 seed.

In the 5A Mountain League, three teams are fighting for two remaining playoff spots behind Faith Lutheran and Palo Verde (14-11, 4-3). Arbor View (17-16, 3-3), Centennial (16-15, 2-5) and Shadow Ridge (18-13, 2-5) are all alive. Tuesday's matchups feature Centennial at Arbor View and Shadow Ridge at Palo Verde, with Arbor View traveling to Faith Lutheran on Thursday. Head-to-head tiebreakers favor Arbor View, but total sets won or lost could come into play.

Five teams have secured No. 1 seeds for the 15-team Class 4A state tournament starting Oct. 27: Sierra Vista (21-12, 9-0 Mountain), Sky Pointe (13-7, 9-0 Desert), Green Valley (25-9, 11-0 Lake), Legacy (20-9, 8-1 Sun) and Rancho (15-2, 10-1 Sky). The top three teams from each league qualify. Defending champion Sierra Vista earned a bye to the state quarterfinals on Nov. 2.

In Class 3A, The Meadows (25-3, 11-0 Southern League) has clinched the No. 1 seed while pursuing a sixth straight state title. The Mustangs won back-to-back 2A championships in 2021 and 2022 before capturing the last three 3A crowns.
