McCarthy, Nordstrom in close race for Las Vegas City Council Ward 2

Firefighter Luke McCarthy held a razor-thin lead over Las Vegas Municipal Court Judge Shannon Nordstrom in the race for the City Council's Ward 2 seat, according to unofficial results released early Wednesday. McCarthy led by 0.01 percentage points, capturing 50.05 percent of the vote to Nordstrom's 49.95 percent.

The ward encompasses parts of the west valley, including Summerlin, and is home to more than 116,000 residents. The winner will replace Councilwoman Kara Kelley, who agreed not to seek a full term when she was appointed to the seat.

Two other council contests were settled before November. Ward 4 Councilwoman Francis Allen-Palenske was declared elected as the sole candidate, while Ward 6 Councilwoman Nancy Brune won in the primary.

During the campaign, both candidates said they want to address the city's housing crunch and improve public safety. Both cited the unsafe use of electric bikes and scooters as a top concern among prospective constituents.
