Police: Robbery witnesses targeted in deadly Las Vegas shooting

Three 18- and 19-year-old men have been charged with murder in what police describe as an ambush-style shooting targeting witnesses to an armed robbery in southwest Las Vegas. Brandon Jaymes Thomas McCoy, 18, Raymond Duncan, 19, and Tywann Robert Hoyer-Pitts, 18, each face 66 felonies and 28 gross misdemeanors in the Oct. 10 death of Miguel Chavarria Garcia, 18.

According to a Metropolitan Police Department arrest report, Chavarria Garcia and his friends were at an In-N-Out Burger on South Rainbow Boulevard around 2:11 a.m. when they saw two armed men rob a man of his gold chain. The group briefly followed the robbers' vehicle before a 2018 Nissan Kicks pulled alongside their Acura at the intersection of West Rochelle Avenue and South Durango Drive and gunmen opened fire.

Chavarria Garcia, sitting in the back seat, was struck in the face by a bullet and died at a hospital days later. Crime scene analysts recovered 28 cartridge cases at the scene. Police used video surveillance, cellphone data and a witness account to identify the suspects.

The arrest report states Hoyer-Pitts acknowledged being at the In-N-Out and that he fired upon the vehicle following him with a rifle. McCoy and Hoyer-Pitts appeared in Las Vegas Justice Court Thursday; Duncan was scheduled for an initial hearing Thursday afternoon. All three are being held without bail.

A preliminary hearing for Hoyer-Pitts and McCoy is set for Nov. 19. McCoy's attorney, Dayvid Figler, declined to comment, and an attorney for Hoyer-Pitts could not be reached immediately.
