Raiders coach Klint Kubiak calls backfield situation a ‘moving target’

Raiders coach Klint Kubiak declined Monday to confirm whether Sunday's running back usage signaled a permanent shift, calling the situation a "moving target" that will change week to week based on practice performance and game flow.

Mike Washington Jr. rushed for 83 yards on 25 carries in the 38-33 win over the New York Jets, while former top-10 pick Ashton Jeanty recorded a career-low two carries but caught four passes for 64 yards. Kubiak said the offensive line and tight ends blocked well and that Washington ran well, providing a spark in the run game.

"I stand by what I said (after Sunday's 38-33 win over the New York Jets) that we're going to need Mike, we're going to need Ashton and we're going to need Dylan (Laube)," Kubiak said. "They're all part of our success, run and pass." He added that Jeanty was phenomenal in pass protection and made huge plays in the passing game.

Kubiak said Washington's expanded role stemmed from proving himself in practice. "I think it goes back to proving it in practice," Kubiak said. "Having solid practice days, being on point with his assignments. He's just continued to improve."

At wide receiver, Kubiak said Jalen Nailor earned his touchdown and increased opportunities with strong practices. Regarding Dont'e Thornton Jr., who was activated from injured reserve but inactive Sunday, Kubiak said the rookie must "steal another guy's job" on the practice field to break into the rotation.
