A Reno man pleaded guilty Monday to a federal bank robbery charge and faces up to 20 years in prison, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced. Jack Van Eaton Jr. entered a financial institution in May and handed a teller a written demand note instructing them to turn over hundred- and fifty-dollar bills.
Fearing for their physical safety, the bank employee emptied cash from the drawer and surrendered it to Van Eaton, who fled the area on foot. Federal prosecutors and FBI investigators condemned the theft and reaffirmed their focus on prosecuting crimes committed against financial institutions and bank personnel.
"Mr. Van Eaton's actions put a bank teller in fear for personal profit," said Christopher S. Delzotto, special agent in charge of the FBI Las Vegas Field Office. "His guilty plea sends a clear message that threats and intimidation against innocent victims will not be tolerated. The FBI and our law enforcement partners remain committed to holding offenders accountable and protecting our communities. The outcome is certain: Justice will find you."
Van Eaton is scheduled to be sentenced in U.S. District Court on Feb. 1.
