Report ranks Las Vegas among North America’s lowest quality-of-life cities

The Las Vegas Valley ranked near the bottom of North American cities for quality of life in a new report from the online database Numbeo. The region placed 66th out of 73 metropolitan areas evaluated, ahead of only seven cities including Los Angeles, Detroit, New York, three Canadian cities and Phoenix. Ottawa, Canada topped the list, followed by Tampa, Oklahoma City and Tucson.

The rankings weighed factors such as purchasing power, safety, healthcare, cost of living, traffic commute times, pollution and climate. Las Vegas scored below average on virtually every measure, with its weakest showing in the property price-to-income ratio. The report covers data through mid-2026.

The low ranking aligns with other recent assessments. Realtor.com gave Nevada a "C-" for housing affordability and homebuilding, noting that home prices have risen exponentially since the pandemic while wage growth has remained largely stagnant. WalletHub ranked Nevada 45th among states, citing low scores in affordability, economy, education, healthcare and safety. Consumer Affairs placed Nevada as the sixth worst state to move to based on 2025 data.

Local housing costs illustrate the pressure. Roof replacement in the valley runs an estimated $9,020 to $18,040, a heavier burden given lower household incomes compared to neighboring metros. With mortgage rates above 7 percent, sellers are increasingly offering to help buyers lower monthly payments rather than cut asking prices. Free-rent offers have also surged as a wave of new apartments gives tenants more leverage.
