High school state tournaments for boys and girls soccer and girls volleyball get underway Wednesday, with champions to be crowned across multiple classifications by week's end. The Class 5A girls soccer semifinals highlight the opening day at Faith Lutheran, where top-seeded Bishop Gorman faces No. 4 Centennial at 5 p.m. and No. 2 Faith Lutheran meets No. 3 Arbor View at 6:30 p.m.
Faith Lutheran seeks a third consecutive 5A girls title, which would make the Crusaders the first program since Arbor View's five straight 4A championships from 2012-16 to achieve a three-peat. The three Southern powers — Gorman (19-2-1), Faith Lutheran (14-2-3) and Arbor View (17-2-3) — finished separated by just one game in the league standings after one of the most competitive seasons among the top teams.
In 4A girls soccer, Palo Verde (17-3) and Sierra Vista (18-3) represent the South at Spring Valley on Friday and Saturday. Palo Verde plays Reno High at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by Sierra Vista against Northern champion Galena at 6:45 p.m. The title game is set for 10 a.m. Saturday. Palo Verde lost to Galena in last year's state semifinals.
The 3A girls tournament begins Friday at Reed High in Reno. Southern champion Moapa Valley (20-5-2) faces two-time defending state champion South Tahoe at 2 p.m., while Boulder City (11-3-4) meets Northern champion Truckee at noon. It marks Moapa Valley's first girls soccer state semifinal appearance.
On the boys side, a new 5A champion will be crowned with three-time winner Coronado absent from the field. Arbor View (14-8-3) plays Sparks at 5 p.m. Friday at Faith Lutheran, and Palo Verde (16-5-3) faces Northern champion Hug at 6:45 p.m. The boys final is scheduled for noon Saturday at Faith Lutheran.
