The undefeated Miami Hurricanes claimed the top spot in the first College Football Playoff rankings released Tuesday, followed by Georgia, undefeated Utah and defending national champion Indiana to round out the top four.
The selection committee's initial bracket produced several surprises, most notably Notre Dame checking in at No. 11 — seven spots lower than its AP Top 25 position and the last team included in the 12-team field. The Fighting Irish sit behind BYU at No. 9 and Ole Miss at No. 10.
UCLA, the nation's other undefeated team, was slotted eighth behind No. 5 Alabama, No. 6 Kentucky and No. 7 Texas. Ohio State landed at No. 12, leaving the Buckeyes on the outside looking in because Boise State, ranked 25th, would receive the Group of Six automatic bid.
