‘Stick with it’: Golden Knights 2nd line on verge of breaking through

The Golden Knights' second line featuring Mitch Marner, Brett Howden and William Karlsson has generated chances but has not yet translated them into points, combining for just eight points early in the season. Despite the low point total, the line has performed well in other areas, outshot opponents 29-23 in 61 minutes and 36 seconds of 5-on-5 ice time and held an edge in scoring chances (33-27) and high-danger chances (9-8).

Their expected goals total stands at 3.15 while allowing only 1.82, indicating they are creating quality opportunities. However, they have been outscored 3-2 in actual goals, a discrepancy the report notes is partly due to the limitations of the plus/minus metric. The line did break through on Thursday when Karlsson drove to the net, dropped the puck to Marner, who found Howden streaking to the backdoor for his first goal of the season.

Marner praised the team effort, saying, 'It's a great play by everyone there. I'm just trying to put it in an area for one of them to get a piece of it.' After a tough outing in Seattle where they were outshot 7-2 but allowed no goal, the line responded with seven scoring chances against the Kings while holding Los Angeles to three. Coach Pete DeBoer, referred to as Craig in the report, said the message to the line is to stay with it, noting that early-season performance is often magnified and that he believes the floodgates will open soon.
