In just a few short weeks, we'll be up to our jingle bells in winter season-themed bar pop-ups. But before we throw back a few with Santa and the Krampus, Griselda the undead mermaid would like a word. The sleek, scaly, partially skeletonized spokes-zombie for Erin Hayes' and Kelsey Ramages' Black Lagoon Halloween bar pop-up is holding a spot for you at Allan Katz' and Danielle Crouch's bar Jammyland through November 3. You really need to get down there and dive in.
"Black Lagoon is an immersive experience paying homage to the pulpy and playful elements of the occult, the bizarre, the macabre and the horrific, while serving innovative and delicious spooky cocktails," says Jammyland co-owner Katz via email. "Think of a dark dungeon with blood-chilling cocktails served up by a coven of witches."
What this means for the Arts District bar is that its usual reggae-inspired, indoor-outdoor digs—at least partially inspired by Katz's time hanging out at Jammyland Records, a Jamaican record store and rehearsal studio in New York's East Village—is that the dark, airy Arts District bar now feels like a proper crypt, with giant spiders in the rafters, tentacles draped languidly over surfaces and "skulls on skulls," as Katz puts it. The bar's usual soundtrack of Afro-Caribbean beats is augmented with spooky punk, garage, goth, metal and psychobilly. It's a proper freakout, and that's even before you get into Hayes' and Ramages' contributions.
The Black Lagoon pop-up, born in Toronto in 2021, now happens in venues across the US and Canada. It means well-balanced, non-traditional tiki drinks "created by dedicated cocktail nerds and executed by dedicated cocktail nerds," as Katz puts it. They include the vodka, black sesame, miso falernum, Lustau Fino sherry and lemon Midnight Forever, the Fords Gin, Lustau Vermut Blanco, Giffard Liqueur Mangue, tarragon, lemon, Bitter Queens Thai Spice and Soda Griselda's Revenge and the Kraken Black, Kraken Gold, Mr Black coffee liqueur, passionfruit, coconut, pineapple and Bitter Queens Coffee Cardamom Bitter Nocturna Colada.
Best of all, you can order your drinks in exclusive glassware or a bone-color Griselda tiki mug, designed by Candy Wild. And they're all available for purchase, a little souvenir of your time in the wonderfully murky waters of Black Lagoon Las Vegas, 2025. Drink them while they're cold.
