Wind advisory, flood watch in store for Las Vegas Valley

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory and a flood watch for the Las Vegas Valley and surrounding areas starting Saturday. The wind advisory runs from 2 p.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday for western Clark County, Esmeralda, Lincoln, and central and southern Nye counties, with south winds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts between 45 and 55 mph expected. Forecasters warn that tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result. A lull in winds is likely late Saturday night through Sunday morning before they increase again Sunday afternoon. Southern Clark County, along with portions of northwest Arizona and southeast California, is under a separate wind advisory from 5 a.m. Sunday to 5 a.m. Monday.

A flood watch is in effect from Saturday morning through late Sunday night for a wide swath of Nevada, including the Las Vegas Valley, Spring Mountains, Red Rock Canyon, Primm, Mt. Charleston, Mesquite, Searchlight, Moapa, Laughlin, and Hoover Dam. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying or flood-prone locations. Flooding may also occur in poor drainage and urban areas, and low-water crossings may be flooded.

The wet weather is driven by remnants of Tropical Storm Rachel, which are expected to bring showers and storms to Southern Nevada beginning late Saturday night and continuing into Sunday. There is a 60 percent chance of rain after 10 p.m. Saturday, with chances increasing overnight. Sunday brings a 90 percent chance of rain, especially during the afternoon hours.
