The Clark County coroner’s office has scheduled a news conference Thursday afternoon at the Metropolitan Police Department’s headquarters to identify the man found in a barrel at Hemenway Harbor at Lake Mead in 2022. The body was discovered by boaters as Lake Mead’s water levels declined, and the coroner’s office had previously ruled the death a homicide due to a gunshot wound.
The man’s identity has remained unknown to the public since the discovery. NamUs described him as between 5 feet 6 inches and 6 feet 1 inch tall and aged between 27 and 61 years old. Over the years, speculation has linked the case to mob-related theories, including possible connections to figures like Tony Spilotro, George 'Jay' Vandemark, William Crespo, or Johnny Pappas.
Clothing released two years ago — a dirty Idletime buttoned-down shirt, jeans, a digital Timex watch, and Kmart sneakers from the 1970s — has complicated those theories, with experts suggesting the inexpensive attire may indicate the victim was of little means or dressed by the killers. The coroner’s office announced that remains discovered more than four years ago have been positively identified.
