Construction starts on new housing project at former Badlands golf course

Construction is underway at the former Badlands golf course, where homebuilder Lennar Corp. began site work a few months ago on the roughly 250-acre property now known as The Preserve. Homesites and roads are taking shape at the corner of Alta Drive and Hualapai Way in the northwest section of the site.

Plans call for 1,480 residences, including a mix of townhomes, condos and freestanding houses, along with amenities such as a community pool, fitness center, playground, and basketball and pickleball courts. The project follows years of litigation over the property that cost Las Vegas taxpayers a significant amount.

Lennar was not involved in the legal battle, taking control of the land through a settlement between the city and the prior landowners. Las Vegas division president Joy Broddle said the transaction was unique because the property was a golf course with "some rough history."

Broddle said Lennar's goal with The Preserve is to "turn that around" and make it a "positive story" for the community.
