Utah authorities are connecting serial killer Ted Bundy to another homicide

Summit County officials plan to hold a news conference Tuesday to announce that another decades-old homicide has been linked to serial killer Ted Bundy. The sheriff and county attorney will detail the investigation, the findings that led to the conclusion, and the decision to close the case, according to the sheriff's office.

The victim's name has not been released, though the 1974 death of 17-year-old Melissa Ann Smith has long been listed as a local cold case. Bundy, who was executed in Florida in 1989, confessed to numerous crimes in his final days, though not all have been confirmed.

Advances in DNA testing have allowed authorities to continue adding to Bundy's confirmed victim tally, which stands at at least 30 women and girls killed across multiple states in the 1970s. In April, Utah authorities announced Bundy was responsible for the murder of Laura Ann Aime, 17, who disappeared on Halloween 1974.
